About Floor Covering & Flooring Installation

Christina Collection Flooring - Floor Covering

Luxury Vinyl SPC Flooring Meets Celebrity

Colonial Decorators provides their customers with the latest trends in quality home flooring and the Christina Collection Flooring falls within that category. Homeowners across the nation are benefiting from this luxury vinyl that was recently introduced to the flooring industry.

Stemming from her experience on television, Christina Haack, of the design show Christina on the Coast and HGTV’s Flip or Flop, used her home renovation and design knowledge to create a luxury vinyl flooring line that is stylish, durable and affordable. This line of flooring is a luxury vinyl with a generous 9″ plank width that is available to our Colonial Decorators, Flooring America customers here in Grants Pass, Oregon and many more Southern Oregon cities and communities.

“I would stack it up against anything I’ve seen,” Haack told Floor Covering News. Christina has been renovating and flipping houses since 2009, so she has seen the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to stylish and durable floor covering. Most home owners know that durability is an important feature when it comes to choosing flooring. Christina knows that as well. That is why her floor covering line was created and built to deliver the goods while being subject to the traffic of three kids and two dogs. It stands up to the traffic because it is SPC flooring.

What Is SPC? Hint, Hint... Stone Plastic Composite

Christina Haack further said in her interview with FCNews, “I do not want a floor that scratches, and I do not want a floor that will be ruined if I spill something on it. That’s what everyone wants. So, that’s why this floor is so important. It’s all about reducing a mom’s stress.” With those needs in mind, Christina couldn’t have selected a better type of flooring for her floor covering line than SPC.

SPC, which stands for Stone Plastic Composite, is a multilayer vinyl flooring product made of a composite of stone and plastic, giving it a rigid core. This core is made from a mixture of limestone and stabilizers which increases its rigidity. These dense boards can withstand impacts that would dent regular LVP, making them the perfect choice for heavy traffic areas in homes and for light traffic areas in some commercial or office settings.

5 Quality Layers In Waterproof Luxury Vinyl Flooring

The Christina Collection, waterproof luxury vinyl SPC flooring, has all the layers going for it. 5 layers, to be exact; the surface finish, wear layer, image layer, SPC core and the backing layer. A 6.5mm thick SPC, the Christina Collection is constructed with a scratch resistant and stain resistant surface finish, a 20MIL wear layer, an image layer for that realistic wood look, a 5mm SPC core, and a 1.5mm IXPE pad backing layer. The Christina Collection is made of materials that are 100% Virgin PVC and it boasts painted, beveled edges, painted and beveled ends, and a tongue & groove, angle click joining system.

Multiple Color & Wood Grain Style Options For Luxury Vinyl

The Christina Collection Luxury Vinyl comes in 21 flooring styles, including Austin Creek, Beacon Hill, Blanca, Camelback, Castle Rock, Channel Island, Chaparral, Del Norte, Denali, Diamond Peak, Enchanted Peak, Escalade, Fells Pointe, Geyser, Kings Peak, Palo Duro, Pikes Peak, Pointe Isabel, Rainier, Silver Strand and Whitney. The 21 styles accentuate the natural wood grain appearance in color schemes that range from light, to medium and dark while incorporating different levels of opaqueness from clear to washed and varying wood wear characteristics from unnoticeable to light wire brush effect.

• Carpet Installation

Carpet flooring can feel luxurious and indulgent. It’s a gift to your feet and can express so much about your family’s personality and lifestyle. No matter what carpet you’re looking for, among Colonial Decorators' selections you'll find the one to your feet's liking. Select the carpet fiber that's just right for your family's dance. If you’re looking to install carpet flooring in your home, the expert installers at Colonial Decorators are your ticket to your carpet flooring dreams.

Choose the right carpet type for you

Step 1 – Choosing the Right Carpet Type For You

At Colonial Decorators, we have many carpet brands so you can choose the look you like from among the five major carpet cut types: plush (or cut) pile, berber cut pile, berber loop pile, cut-and-loop pile and commercial loop. Each of those types is available in different types of fiber, both natural (such as Wool, Sea Grass, Sisal, and Coir) or synthetic (such as nylon, polyester, acrylic or olefin). High-traffic areas benefit from flecks of subtle color or texture in carpet fibers that help hide soil and footprints. Formal areas come alive with plush carpet that is truly a treat for the eyes and feet. Colonial Decorators can evaluate your home’s living spaces to be certain you choose, and have installed, the best carpet cut and fiber for your needs.

Getting rid of existing carpet

Step 2 – Getting Rid of Existing Carpet

Pulling up old carpet can be a difficult task. Years of use, especially if there have been pets in the home; can leave your carpet full of dirt and animal hair. Most installers protect themselves by wearing a mask. Most of the time they will remove any moldings around the floor or doors and carefully cut out the old carpet.

Laying the carpet padding

Step 3 – Laying the Padding

The installer will clean and dry your floor thoroughly. The cleaner the underfloor is, the cleaner the carpet will be. The installer may leave existing tackless strips. If there are none, they will install new strips. Next, the old pad will be removed and replaced with new carpet pad, creating a huge difference in the feel and performance of your new carpet.

Laying new carpet

Step 4 – Laying the New Carpet

Carpet pieces must be slightly larger than the room they are installed in with an overlay of up to six inches. Trimming this overlay can be tricky and it’s extremely important that it be cut correctly. Colonial Decorators' expert installers execute this like seasoned surgeons, reducing carpet waste and preventing damage.

Carpet seams

Step 5 – Match Up Carpet Seams

Most rooms require more than one piece of carpet. The carpet is cut with the utmost precision so the seams line up perfectly. Seam tape is used to join the two pieces of carpet. Seams between two pieces of carpet must be cut at the same time, or their edges won’t match exactly. Seaming tape must be used correctly with a steaming iron and carpet roller or the seams won’t properly seal. Colonial Decorators' expert installers will have the equipment, knowledge and the experience to ensure your carpet seams are done right the first time.

Stretching and attaching new carpet

Step 6 – Stretching and Attaching the Carpet

To finish the installation, the carpet must be stretched using first a “knee kicker” and then a carpet spreader to attach the carpet to the tackless strips along each wall. Stretching should be followed up by final wall trimming, tucking at the walls, and reinstallation of the molding at the baseboards.

• Hardwood Flooring Installation

Installing hardwood flooring in your home can transform your living space. With a variety of types available, hardwood floor installation can be customized to coordinate with any style of décor. If you’re thinking about hardwood installation for your home, here are the basic steps of the installation process. There are some things for you to consider about each step of the process before you move forward. Colonial Decorators has decades of experience working with expert installers and they can help you select the right hardwood flooring for your needs that you can install in your home.

Choosing the correct hardwood floor

Step 1 – Choosing the Correct Hardwood Floor

Colonial Decorators offers many different types of hardwood flooring brands for you to choose from to ensure your new hardwood flooring is a perfect fit for your home. Moisture is bad news for hardwood flooring and can lead to warping, bowing, splitting and cracking. Most hardwood flooring isn’t recommended for installation in humid areas; however, engineered hardwood can be installed in humid areas in some cases when installed with a moisture barrier. Colonial Decorators has the equipment necessary to measure a home’s humidity levels, room by room, so they can recommend the absolute best wood flooring for your needs.

Getting rid of the old flooring

Step 2 – Getting Rid of the Old Floor

Removing existing flooring can be like stepping back in time. There might be layer after layer of flooring that needs to be removed. You can assume you’re approaching a project that seems simple and straightforward, and then you discover that the old tile floor was placed on top of several layers of vinyl! Pulling up the old flooring thoroughly isn’t easy, and disposing of the waste afterward can be difficult. Colonial Decorators' professional installers will do the work to save you the task of stripping off each layer of flooring and they’ll clean up all the trash afterward.

Preparing the sub-floor

Step 3 – Preparing the Sub-Floor

The process of removing any existing flooring can leave the sub-floor in a repairable condition. While you might not think this is problematic – after all, it’s going to be covered by your new flooring – it actually is. Even a gouge a fraction of an inch in depth can leave your new flooring squeaking and bouncing. Leveling a sub-floor is crucial. In fact, some “fixes” lead to structural issues that can only be solved after consulting a structural engineer.

The preparation of the subfloor prevents creaking and bouncing of the installed hardwood floor. The Colonial Decorator team of expert installers will make any necessary repairs to the subfloor so that your new hardwood floor performs as it was designed to perform.

Preparing the new floor

Step 4 – Preparing the New Floor

Your new hardwood flooring has to rest inside your home, acclimating to your home’s particular humidity and temperature. This process can take up to a week and a half. Installing hardwood flooring during extreme temperature seasons such as summer or winter can be a mistake without the proper precautions and it can affect the look and feel of the flooring down the road. The installer will take the proper precautions during extreme temperature seasons such as summer or winter.

Putting down the flooring

Step 5 – Putting Down the Flooring

Laying a hardwood floor properly has everything to do with placing the first few boards. Properly set, these boards allow for an easy installation. Done improperly, your flooring will have gaps and not lay evenly. Because your home isn’t just one large square, you’re going to have to know how to work around walls, vents and doorways and know how to transition to different flooring types when joining the flooring in other rooms. Years of experience in installing hardwood flooring makes short order of doing all of this properly. Colonial Decorators' expert installers have years of experience and the knowledge to ensure every piece of flooring is laid correctly.

• Sheet And Tile Vinyl Flooring Installation

Sheet vinyl flooring is an extremely popular option for homeowners, especially in areas that tend to be moist, such as kitchens and bathrooms. Vinyl is versatile, providing water and stain resistance along with long-term durability. Vinyl is, not only an attractive flooring look, but can also be an inexpensive choice when remodeling a room. If you’re looking to install sheet vinyl flooring in your home, the Colonial Decorators flooring store has the professional installers to install your vinyl properly and the store's staff are flooring pros with expert knowledge in flooring products who can help you get the right flooring for your needs.

Choosing the best vinyl floor

Step 1 – Choosing the Best Vinyl Flooring

Colonial Decorators offers many vinyl brands. Vinyl flooring comes in two types, which are differentiated by their backing: felt or fiberglass. Felt has traditionally been the most popular of the two, but new fiberglass options offer greater durability and increased comfort and cushion underfoot. Both types of flooring have a printed vinyl design layer covered by a protective clear vinyl layer and top coat, allowing it to resist scratches and scuffs and to be cleaned easily. When you order your vinyl, it’s vital that you obtain accurate measurements. If you fail to measure carefully, you could end up with too little vinyl to complete the job.

Removing old floor

Step 2 – Getting Rid of Any Obstacles and Existing Flooring

Depending on the room in which you’re working, you’ll need to remove various obstacles. If you’re working in the kitchen, this may mean removing stoves/ovens, refrigerators and molding. In bathrooms, you must remove the toilet and baseboards. Old flooring must also be carefully removed. This tedious, sometimes distasteful task is made so much easier by having Colonial Decorators' expert installers do the heavy liftiing for you, all of whom are accustomed to the many challenges of flooring removal and installation.

Preparing the sub-floor

Step 3 – Preparing the Sub-Floor

Vinyl flooring should sit on a flat, smooth surface in order to be installed properly. Unfortunately, in the process of removing any existing flooring, you might have scratched, gouged or otherwise damaged the sub-floor. Even though this sub-floor will be covered by the new vinyl you’ve chosen, those minor imperfections are a problem. Even small bumps leave your new flooring uneven. Leveling a sub-floor without the proper knowledge can make the problem worse, in some cases leading directly to structural issues that require the aid of a structural engineer.

Placing underlayment

Step 4 – Preparing Precise Measurements and Placing an Underlayment

If your room is very large or has hard-to-reach areas, a paper template can save you time and money by ensuring that each cut you make to the vinyl flooring is precise and accurate. Underlayment of vinyl floor grade plywood helps provide an even, smooth surface for vinyl flooring installation. The underlayment should rest in your home for up to three days, acclimating to your home’s individual temperature and humidity. Skipping this step can lead to the vinyl coming up in the future. The underlayment must be installed properly to avoid bumps becoming clearly visible on the finished flooring. This method can vary depending on the subfloor.

Putting down sheet and tile vinyl flooring

Step 5 – Putting Down the Sheet And Tile Vinyl Flooring

Your vinyl flooring may come in sheets or square tiles. Vinyl sheets are cut similarly to carpet, while square tiles should be applied in a pattern of some kind. Don’t make the mistake of beginning at a corner with your pattern. Always start in the center of the room or the pattern won’t be symmetrical.

You can help to ensure that the tiles, which end up joining your wall's edges, are symmetrical in where they meet the walls (where they would need to be cut when installing them) by loose laying rows of tiles (without adhesive spread or without removing the adhesive backing) and extending those tiles out from the center tile, in all four directions, to see where the tiles that meet the walls intersect (meet) with the walls. If you have tiles meeting the walls on opposite sides of the room at noticably different depths into the tile and you would prefer they meet at a more symmetrical depth, you can adjust your center tile, one direction or the other, so each tile meets the opposing walls at the same, or near the same depth into each tile.

Most square tiles come with their own adhesive backing and are self-stick, while vinyl sheeting typically must be glued down. Successfully installing vinyl flooring is contingent on firm adhesion of the vinyl to the underlayment. Using a floor roller can ensure a secure bond. Work in sections and don’t move on until the previous section is complete. Once the flooring is installed, you must leave the floor for several hours for the adhesive to dry before you replace the molding, trim, appliances or toilet.

• Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) & Luxury Vinyl TileE (LVT) Installation

Luxury Vinyl flooring products are created with innovative technology to mimic natural hardwood and stone, while providing the durability of vinyl. These high-performance floors are easy to maintain, provide exceptional stain-resistance, and they are waterproof. Luxury Vinyl provides more warmth to a home and comfort to your feet than traditional hardwood or stone flooring. Unlike ceramic, porcelain or stone options, Luxury Vinyl will not crack or break. If you’re looking to install Luxury Vinyl flooring in your home, Colonial Decorators has the flooring experts to help you get the right flooring for your specific needs and the professional installers to install it properly.

Know your LVT/LVP flooring

Step 1 – Know Your Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Colonial Decorators offers many Luxury Vinyl flooring brands that come in looks that are ultra-realistic, but each type can have separate installation instructions. Some types use glue or grout, some lock together and some have peel-off backing. All Luxury Vinyl must acclimate to the environment of your home for a minimum of 48-72 hours. Be sure to measure carefully when ordering your Luxury Vinyl and order enough to include overage.

Remove any obstacles

Step 2 – Removing Any Obstacles

An expert installer will remove all the obstacles in the room, including appliances and trim. If they are working in the kitchen, they will leave the kitchen island in place. Colonial Decorators' flooring experts will also remove any old flooring to reveal the sub-floor. They will work quickly and efficiently to remove the existing floor and dispose it.

Preparing the sub-floor

Step 3 – Preparing the Sub-Floor

Luxury Vinyl flooring should sit on flat, clean sub-flooring. If the subfloor isn’t smooth, the Luxury Vinyl won’t be smooth. Gouges will be filled at this point to ensure the subfloor is smooth.

Putting down LVT

Step 4 – Putting Down the Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Your Luxury Vinyl flooring may come in sheets, planks or square tiles. Depending on the type of Luxury Vinyl flooring you have chosen, you may be snapping planks together, gluing down sheets or peeling the backing off of tiles. Planks should begin by laying them at the edge of a room and working across the room. If you are applying tiles, begin in the center of the room to create a symmetrical pattern. Start by loose laying the tiles (without adhesive) and adjust the placement of the center tile so the tiles meeting the walls on the opposing sides of the room do so either at symmetrical depths into the tiles or so the tile meeting one wall does so at the tile's natural edge if/when the tile meeting the wall on the opposing side of the room does so in an area where it is hidden from view or where it is close to the tile's natural edge. Once you know where you want your center tile placed for the best look of the tiles that meet all four walls, you can proceed to the next step.

The success of your installation of Luxury Vinyl flooring that utilizes adhesion (glue) depends on how it sticks to the sub-floor. Allow the bond to set firmly for several hours before replacing any trim or appliances. The Colonial Decorators team of flooring installation experts have the expertise and tools to complete your installation correctly.

• Ceramic, Porcelain And Stone Tile Installation

Tile flooring has a timeless attraction and can offer designs that are simple or ones that are as unique as each homeowner. Because tile is water-resistant, ceramic, porcelain or stone tile flooring give a home long-wearing durability. This is especially true in kitchens and bathrooms where there is moisture, or high-traffic areas such as family or recreation rooms where spills and stains might be more likely. If you’re looking to install tile flooring in your home, the Colonial Decorators flooring store has the floor covering experts who will help you get the right tile flooring for your specific needs and the professional installers to install your tile right.

Choosing tile flooring

Step 1 – Choosing the Tile Flooring For Your Needs

Different types of tiles and tile brands can have many properties. Some are best for indoor use only, and some offer frost-proof properties that enable them to be installed indoors or outdoors. Both casual and formal settings can benefit from the right choice of tile. From glazed to unglazed finishes, from rustic to contemporary styles, you can find a porcelain, slate or terra cotta tile to suit your needs. Because tile is so versatile, you can create patterns throughout your home created especially by you. Colonial Decorators' professional flooring experts can give you advice about the various tile textures and shade variations.

Remove existing floor

Step 2 – Remove the Existing Flooring

Before the tile is laid, the room must be cleared. Removing carpet or layers of vinyl can take a lot of work and will produce a lot of trash. The expert installers from Colonial Decorators will take care of the trash for you.

Installing cement boards on subfloor

Step 3 – Installing Cement Boards on the Sub-Floor

Because thinset doesn’t bond well with plywood, a sub-floor isn’t recommended as a starting place for tile installation. Cement board adds an additional step to your tile installation, but it is integral to providing a solid substrate for your tile. Because the cement found in mortar and grout contains serious chemicals, safety gear is required.

Placing the tiles

Step 4 – Placing the Tiles

Most tile should be started from the center of a room, creating a pleasing aesthetic appearance. Doing a “dry” layout allows you to see how your tile will look. Don’t forget to include the spacers as you work. Too much thinset spread at once will harden and become difficult to work with. Spacers must be used carefully so that thinset can press up between the tiles. Tiles laid against the edge of the room might need to be altered using a tile saw so that they fit. The installer will precisely cut the tile in order to achieve a seamless look at the edges. The tile should be allowed to dry overnight to set.

Applying grout

Step 5 – Grout Application

After your tile has set (thinset has properly dried, cured), you’re ready to apply the grout. Some tile spacers are meant to be removed prior to grout application; some are meant to be left in place. Before you begin, check with the manufacturer of your particular tile to know what is recommended with your tile. The installer will apply the grout evenly. The surface should be even and smooth. Excess grout will be removed with a sponge and finished with a damp cloth. Work in small areas, smaller than the area you worked in while spreading the thinset. Grout dries much faster and will set after only a few hours. Seal the grout after an appropriate time period, but don’t get the sealant on the tile itself.

• Laminate Flooring Installation

Laminate flooring offers value pricing that includes durability and good looks. Laminate is available in styles that mimic natural materials such as wood grain and stone, as well as styles with a variety of colors and geometric patterns. If you’re looking to install laminate flooring in your home, Colonial Decorators has the floor covering experts that can help you get the right laminate flooring for your specific needs and the professional installers who will install your laminate properly.

Making your best laminate choice

Step 1 – Making your Best Laminate Flooring Choice

Laminate flooring is perfect for high-traffic areas and active families. Colonial Decorators offers many options of laminate flooring brands to help you choose the best flooring for your home. Four layers make up laminate flooring: wear, design, core and back. The back layer provides stability to the flooring, protecting against moisture and keeps the floor even and balanced. The core layer is a high-density board that helps prevent indentations. The design layer is where the art of the laminate lives, providing a look that appears organic or artistic, depending on what you choose. The wear layer is the top layer that protects everything underneath from stains, burns and fading.

Getting rid of existing floor

Step 2 – Getting Rid of Any Existing Flooring and Obstacles

The room must be clear for the installation of your laminate flooring. The removal of the original flooring will create a lot of trash. The expert installers from Colonial Decorators will dispose of the trash for you.

Preparing the subfloor

Step 3 – Checking and preparing the sub-floor

Concrete sub-floors become problematic over time. Uneven sub-flooring leads to uneven laminate flooring. Attempts to level sub-flooring may lead to structural problems that can only be resolved with a structural engineer.

Installing the underlayment

Step 4 – Installing an Underlayment

Installing an underlayment over the sub-floor is useful. It allows the installer to manually sand the wood underlayment to provide an even base for your laminate installation and it protects the laminate from moisture, which will cause your laminate to buckle or warp over time. The plywood needs to acclimate to your home’s humidity and temperature before installation. If it is not acclimated, it may lead to problems with your laminate down the road. Our professional installers will know how long to let the underlayment rest to allow it to function optimally.

Preparing the laminate

Step 5 – Preparing the Laminate

Just like the underlayment, laminate must be allowed to acclimate to your home. Laminate that has been stored at temperatures colder than those in your home will change shape as it warms inside. Each piece of laminate will be warmed in the home for one to two days to be sure it’s stable. Pieces that aren’t allowed to warm will expand over time and put pressure on the entirety of the floor, causing long-term problems.

Installing the laminate

Step 6 – Installing the Laminate

Modern laminate doesn’t require a hammer to place it properly; in fact, many laminates simply click together. Even though a laminate is acclimated to a living space, there will still be some expansion. To account for this, extra space is left around the edges of the room. The team of professional installers from Colonial Decorators has the expertise necessary to properly install your laminate flooring for its optimal, long life.

The Flooring Installation Prepping Of Your Home Or Office

In the installation of any floor covering, there are a few things that home or property owners can do to help an installation proceed smoothly for a worry-free installation.

Breakables

Our installers will need your help moving your fragile belongings. Please take care to move breakables, including crystal, porcelain, and china from shelves, cabinets, and tables. Don’t forget about decorative items you may have on top of hutches or other furniture.

Heating And Electricity

Please be sure to have your home temperature at a minimum of 65 degrees during the installation process. This will ensure that new carpet and vinyl is protected. Also, please be sure that electric outlets in your home are turned on; installers will need electricity for power tools during some jobs.

Walls And Draperies

Pictures, wall hangings (especially those at a low height), and floor-length draperies may interfere with the installers’ movements. Please remove draperies or tie them back at least 36 inches above the floor.

Closets

Closets and storage areas need to be cleared, and long-hanging clothing needs to be removed to provide a 36-inch space to enable the installer to work freely.

Scheduling

At Colonial Decorators, you can expect your floor covering to be professionally installed on schedule. However, on very rare occasions, the date or time may need to be changed due to circumstances beyond our control. The prompt and professional installation of your floor covering is always our top priority at Colonial Decorators.

Old Flooring

The removal of old flooring and can take a considerable amount of time. Our Colonial Decorators professionals are able to provide you this additional service with the exception of removing vinyl flooring. Due to the possibility of asbestos in old vinyl products, you should always use a licensed asbestos removal company – your sales professional would be happy to assist you in locating such a company.

Doors

After your new flooring has been installed, it may be necessary to trim the bottom of doors to accommodate the change in flooring height. Your sales professional can arrange this for your installation or recommend a company to complete this work.

Furniture Moving

We will gladly handle the moving of regular furniture during installation. Some items may require special handling and you can arrange these services in advance with your Colonial Decorators sales professional and may require an additional charge. Please note that pool tables, grand pianos, and wood stoves must be handled by professionals and should be moved prior to installation.

Appliances And Electronics

Some appliances may require special handling. Arrangements for disconnections and hookups of ice makers, gas appliances, commodes, or alarm systems should be made prior to installation. Stereos and other electronic equipment should also be moved before the time of installation.

Carpet Types

Plush Or Cut-Pile

Loops trimmed off with yarn bundles standing straight up. Repeated pre-shearing creates a luxurious appearance. A great ‘whole house’ carpet, medium durability. Popular varieties include saxony plush: short, densely packed tufts; textured plush: decoratively versatile,
textured surface helps hide footprints and vacuum marks; velvet plush: lightly twisted cut-piles with a uniform color and luxurious appearance that’s ideal for formal areas.

Berber Cut-Pile

Newer berber look with color and interest of traditional loop berbers and the great plush feel of thick, cut-pile carpet. Very versatile. Ideal for casual rooms and kids rooms. Subtle color flecks help hide soil.

Berber Loop-Pile

High, closed level loops stand upright, creating a nubby, rugged texture that looks natural and handcrafted. Tight loop texture helps hide foot and vacuum marks. Uncut loops tend to wear better than cut-pile.

Cut-&-Loop Pile

Combined cut and looped fibers provide a variety of surface textures or carved/sculptured effects for medium durability. Multiple colors and levels hide dirt and footprints in formal or informal areas. Also available in solid colors.

Commercial Loop

Versatile styles in a durable, long-wearing surface pile engineered for high-traffic areas. Captivating color choices and textured surfaces suitable for professional and practical installations.

Carpet Fibers

There are six main types of fibers used in carpet and three other, lesser known types; acrylic, nylon, olefin (polypropylene), olefin blends of nylon/olefin, polyester, wool, sisal, sea grass and coir. Nearly all carpet, about 96% of carpeting is made from synthetic fibers. Synthetic, or man-made, carpet is more resistant to stains and less expensive than natural fiber carpet. The natural fibers make up about 4% of the remaining carpet that is used and they are naturally crush resistant which helps in high traffic areas.

Acrylic Carpet

Acrylic fiber carpet is the artificial wool of the industry, providing the look and feel of wool at a fraction of the cost, the man-made fiber resists static electricity, moisture, mildew, fading, crushing, staining, and sun damage, but it isn't durable enough for high traffic areas.

Nylon Carpet

Nylon is the workhorse of the flooring industry. It is the strongest carpet fiber with optimal durability, has excellent abrasion, insect and chemical resistance and it is less apt to mold, mildew or rot compared to other carpet fibers. Nylon carpet can last up to between 12 and 15 years. Nylon has tremendous color retention, is static free and easy to maintain. It maintains fiber height and it resists soiling and staining. Nylon is by far the most popular carpet with 90% of home owners opting to have it installed. When both residential and commercial use is considered, 65% of all users opt to have it installed. Nylon fiber carpet is in the middle of the pack as far as price is concerned; generally being less expensive than wool but more expensive than polypropylene and polyester.

Olefin (Polypropylene) Carpet

Following nylon, olefin (polypropylene) fiber carpet is the most used and it makes up 80% of all commercial carpet installations. Olefin fiber is highly resistant to fading, making it a good option for carpet exposed to large windows with direct sunlight. It is abrasion, mildew and moisture resistant. Olefin is easy to clean. It can be cleaned with bleach when manufacturer specifications state if is safe to do so. Olefin is suitable for high traffic areas when nylon is not an option, but it isn't the industry standard winner for crush resistance as some cuts are more prone to matting and crushing. Olefin generally costs less than nylon, polyester and wool.

Olefin Blends Carpet

Olefin blends are typically made from nylon and olefin (polypropylene). This blend has great resiliency, but different fibers can resist and/or absorb stains differently, leaving one with a carpet that tends to stain unevenly. Due to this dynamic, the stains can stand out prominently.

Polyester Carpet

Polyester has a luxurious feel and it can look great, but it typically does not last as long as other carpet fibers as it does not maintain its fiber height over a long lifespan; therefore, it is less optimal for high traffic areas and in rooms where shifting weight is a part of the normal, frequent use of an area. Polyester can fade when installed in rooms that are exposed to bright sunlight. Polyester is easy to clean. It is resistant to water soluble stains and durable against abrasions.

Polyester carpet also comes in a recycled version. Polyester/PET (Polyester/Polyethylene Terephthalate) is the environmental darling of the carpet industry. Most carpet made with this fiber is made from recycled bottle caps so it is inexepensive compared to other carpet fibers; especially wool and nylon. It is a fiber that offers bright color selections and it is available in many textures. It is more stain resistant than nylon carpet and at least as resistant to mold and mildew. For those with allergy tendencies, it may fit the bill as it is non-allergenic. Because Polyester/Pet is plastic, before using in an entire home it is advised to first try it in one room to see how you like it.

Wool Carpet

A beauty to behold, wool is a purely natural product; luxurious, strong, and stain resistant. Wool is very durable. It maintains its fiber height very well. Soft to the touch and very dense, wool has a more comfortable feel than other carpet fibers. Wool hides soil better than synthetic fibers due to its opacity. Synthetic fibers are less opaque, so their strands are more clear and soil can be seen through them. Available in a large array of colors, it is an excellent choice for its rich and luxurious appearance. Compared to synthetic fiber carpets, it may require care to maintain its beauty over a long lifespan. It is susceptible to fading when exposed to sunlight. Wool has a low resistance to stains and to many of the chemicals used to remove stains. Because wool is a natural fiber, it can attract and suffer damage from beetles, moths and other insects.

Sisal Carpet

Sisal carpet is made from fiber derived from the agave plant. Stronger and more durable than other natural fibers, it is earthy and rough-textured like jute. Sisal carpets usually contain jute, hemp, sea grass, and coconut fibers.

Sea Grass Carpet

Sea Grass carpet adds a wonderful natural look and feel to any room. It can be damaged by chemicals and is susceptible to mold and insects.

Coir Carpet

Coir carpet fiber is extracted from the husks of coconuts. Coir is one of the most environmentally-friendly fibers. It is tough, hard wearing and versatile, with natural aesthetic appeal. Coir carpet is available in rich and bold textures.
